Phonics and early reading
Phonics
Phonics is an essential element in teaching children to read and write. We use the Read Write Inc to plan the teaching of phonics in our school. This scheme is closely followed, and helps our pupils to develop vital early reading skills.
Books are carefully matched to pupils and children are grouped effectively each half-term to ensure they get the support and challenge they need to be successful.
Parents of children in our EYFS are invited to take part in a phonics workshop to learn about how we teach phonics, to enable them to support their child at home with their reading.
Early reading
We value reading as a crucial life skill. Therefore we place great importance on reading for pleasure and work hard as a school to support our children to develop a love of reading. We always want our children to want to choose a book and know how to challenge themselves. Therefore, we have our 6 Book Challenge. (For further information, see our Reading for Pleasure page.)
Because we believe teaching every child to read is so important, we have a co-Reading Leader who drives the early reading programme in our school. Both are highly skilled at teaching phonics and reading, and they monitor and support our reading team, so everyone teaches in line with the Read Write Inc. programme.
